MIRAZID

A MODEL OF SUCCESS IN DRUG DEVELOPMENT FROM NATURAL SOURCE
Schistosomiasis continues to be a major public health problem in many countries including Egypt. It is estimated to infect 200 - 300 million people in Africa, the Middle East, South America, Caribbean, and Southeast Asia. Depending on almost a single drug (Praziquantel) for over 20 years has presented realities of potential resistance to the drug as well as the increasing hazards of prolonged recurrent use over the years. Recent reports of lower cure rates have been reported thereby bringing on a need for a new treatment. MIRAZID, a registered trademark in Egypt and other countries, is a new patented special preparation from a plant origin for the treatment of Schistosomiasis and Fascioliasis providing outstanding cure rates together with extreme safety and tolerability. Mirazid has also proven effective as a broad spectrum anthelminthic for nematodes, cestodes and other trematodes. Mirazid has been subjected to extensive pre-clinical studies followed by multi-center human clinical trials for safety and efficacy in the treatment of many parasitic infections.

THE NOVEL ANTI-PSORIATIC OINTMENT FROM NATURAL ORIGIN
ALOREED is the first Egyptian product of its kind for topical treatment of different forms of psoriasis. Aloreed uniquely counteracts the pathogenesis of psoriasis providing successful and complete clearance of psoriatic lesions. The response to the treatment with Aloreed was found to be very good to excellent in most of the studies in the range of 75 – 88% with marked reduction of the PASI score.

PEDYPHAR

THE NOVEL OINTMENT FOR DIABETIC FOOT
PEDYPHAR is an effective and safe conservative local treatment for cases of diabetic foot infections. Foot ulcerations and infections are a major cause of morbidity in diabetic patients. They are a main risk factor for non-traumatic lower-extremity amputation, up to 60% of which have been estimated to occur in diabetic patients.
Clinical studies showed a positive 96% overall response rate among patients that were treated conservatively with Pedyphar. Results showed a complete closure of the ulcer without signs of underlying bone infection by the end of 9 weeks and for the total follow up period of 6 months.

Pharco Corporation is committed to continuous research and development to discover new solutions for today’s foremost medical challenges. This includes finding new uses for existing products and investigating entirely new areas of pharmaceutical science. This commitment resulted in the discovery of Mirazid ®, the new era in the treatment of schistosomiasis and facioliasis. Mirazid ® is the first Egyptian product of its kind with patency from the USA, Japan and Europe. By 2008, Mirazid had 63% market share with over 800,000 packs sold. Newly developed drugs go through a rigorous approval process consisting of three phases. Phase I is the animal toxicology and pharmacology phase. Once a drug passes through Phase I, it goes to Phase II for human clinical studies in small numbers of volunteers. Phase III involves comparative trials on large numbers of patients. Pharco R&D group enjoys the synergy of its expert staff and is made up of 40 leading medical experts lead by a professor of Pharmaceuticals of Alexandria University. The group works in three state of the art research facilities; a Bioreactor lab, a chemical synthesis lab and a special lab for animal studies. Research activities are also outsourced to university facilities such as The Science Park, a new modern research center donated to Alexandria University by Pharco Corporation. ORILIN

A NEW ORAL ENTERALLY DELIVERED INSULIN
A common obstacle to a full routine use of peptide hormones (like insulin) is that peptide hormones cannot be administered orally since they undergo digestion and inactivation in the GIT and a significant first pass metabolism in the liver. New modalities for drug delivery are being searched for to satisfy the needs of patients and prescribers, for increase in comfort levels, compliance, safety & convenience. Intranasal, transdermal, inhalational routes are being used now for systemic & local drug delivery but still with limitations in the clinical use of insulin. To increase the pharmacological availability of insulin given by mouth, a new formulation for enteral delivery of insulin has been developed by Pharco.
